Position Summary:

The MES (Manufacturing Execution System) Programmer II will be responsible for the infrastructure, controls, and automation systems across several facilities and will be the solution architect who maps the requirement to the capabilities of the system to ensure optimal technical implementation. This position provides technical leadership and coordination in the design, development and implementation of complex industrial applications, databases, and information systems in a production and manufacturing environment.

The MES Programmer II is expected to develop into a technical authority with a firm grasp of project management principles and tools, mentoring and commercial skills and is responsible for assisting in all phases of MES projects, including requirements gathering, detailed design, development, commissioning, documentation, and user training. This role will work in conjunction with the IT teams to maintain existing equipment and to develop long term technology and automation solutions across the company.

Educational Requirements:

B.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, from an accredited college/university

Skills and Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in a combination of process control, automation, software development or information technology management with manufacturing execution systems and/or developing and deploying manufacturing intelligence tools
  • Experience in industrial automation, project management, and lean manufacturing concepts
  • Ability to collect requirements, design and configure manufacturing execution systems, manufacturing intelligence tools, and interfaces between these systems and enterprise resource planning systems
  • Programming and debugging skills with specific emphasis on Visual Basic.NET , C#, and SQL
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks, have excellent attention to detail, and be willing and able to learn new technologies quickly
  • Must be able to work successfully in a matrix structure, focused strongly on customer service and personnel growth
  • Must have experience successfully interacting and working at multiple levels of responsibility in a manufacturing or production environment
  • Must have solid verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated success working in a collaborative team environment
  • Interfacing ERP with Automation systems
  • Experience MES API scripting preferred
  • Experience with MS SQL Server, including SSRS preferred
  • Experience with .NET development (Visual Basic/C# preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience working in a plant environment and prior experience working with machine controls and automation


Essential Duties:

  • Architect and lead the implementation of Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and system integration solutions projects.
  • Create roadmap for full data automation at machine level and prepare for conversion to an ERP (JDE EnterpriseOne) manufacturing future state.
  • Develop automated protocols to streamline planning and scheduling process, maintain raw material visibility and assign raw materials.
  • Integrate with Engineering function(s) to eliminate redundant data entry and automate data input.
  • Installation and configuration of data collection systems, to collect and organize manufacturing data and other systems
  • Design, development, and deployment of manufacturing intelligence tools to evaluate information captured by MES, process historians and other data collection systems.
  • Process re-engineering capabilities where MES is capable of analyzing existing processes; finding bottlenecks, gaps, areas of improvement and can optimize these processes
  • Good understating of Bill of Materials (BOMs), Routings and how to optimize them
  • Responsible for designing, developing and implementing the configuration and/or the custom software components to meet project requirements.
  • Develop necessary platforms to harvest data from AS400, JDE, SQL and other datasets.
  • Facilitate on-going dialog with critical business contacts to continuously improve the thinking, analysis and direction of the shop floor data collection.
  • Work directly with the Manufacturing & Operations Leadership team to fully understand business requirements.
  • Partner with Engineering to map the needs to move to automated factory.
  • Lead technical architecture and design efforts. Assist with developer code reviews.
  • Foster a collaborative team environment, working closely with other members of the IT and Business teams to continually develop, launch, and deliver new capabilities
