Minimum Qualifications
Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters degree in Geoscience, Earth Science, Soil Science, Marine Science or similar with basic knowledge of soil and / or wetland biogeochemistry (preferred). Candidates with Bachelors degrees and substantial lab experience will also be considered.

Position Summary
The Spivak Coastal Biogeochemistry lab seeks a full time lab technician. The individual in this position will assist with lab and field studies focused on 'blue carbon' cycling in salt marshes. We seek a highly motivated and detail oriented individual with a background in biogeochemistry, wetlands, and / or soil science and experience conducting technical geochemical analyses using a range of instrumentation. This individual will work directly with Dr. Amanda Spivak, support post-doc and/or graduate students, and occasionally oversee undergraduate students. They will join and contribute to a supportive and collaborative lab environment. The appointment is for one year, with the option for renewal upon satisfactory performance.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Experience with organic and inorganic soil and water analyses; experience working with stable isotope labels.
  • Experience with data manipulation and visualizing in R.
  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, written, and verbal communication skills.

Will stand for long periods, conduct field work in salt marshes, and lift 50 lbs.

  • Independently conduct organic and inorganic analyses of environmental soil and water samples

  • Run and maintain instrumentation (IC, GC-MS, IRGA, Spectrophotometer, Fluorometer, Microsensors, etc.) and other lab equipment
  • Independently analyzing data sets using biogeochemical dynamic tools: Perform quality assurance/quality control assessment of data sets. Lead biogeochemical component of research related to discover, document, and understand the complex feedbacks by processing tissue samples for stable isotope analysis.
