Minimum Qualifications
Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
Prefer advanced degree and relevant experience in Marine Science or related scientific field; a minimum of 3 years experience working in a laboratory; lab instructional experience at the college level; experience operating small boats; ability to work effectively and collaboratively and to communicate clearly and professionally in both oral and written formats.
Position Summary
The person in this position coordinates the laboratory facilities at the UGA Marine Institute (UGAMI) on Sapelo Island. This involves ensuring that the Institute is compliant with all environmental safety requirements, providing for safe and responsible use of laboratory facilities by visiting classes and researchers, assisting with instruction, coordinating asset management, and providing administrative support.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
Knowledge of laboratory safety regulations and reporting requirements, including UGA, state and federal regulations for permitting; knowledge of basic laboratory equipment.

Proficiency in standard computer programs. Training in specific laboratory techniques and protocols (Chematix, Artemis-IACUC, Onesource inventory) will be available upon hire if not already obtained.
Physical Demands
Standing or sitting for long periods at a computer or office desk, and moderate lifting (up to 50 lbs). Occasionally working outdoors (on small boats; in the field).

Environmental safety
  • Ensure that UGAMI is compliant with environmental safety regulations, including waste disposal, hazardous material compliance and removal, and radiation safety.
  • Manage and maintain records for collection permits, IACUC permits for animals use, chemical inventory (MSDS and relevant documents) in collaboration with relevant University and State offices.
  • Provide safe and responsible access to laboratory facilities by researchers and classes and ensure compliance with environmental safety and permitting requirements.
  • Coordinate fire and safety inspections and work to address problems.
  • Ensure that UGAMI facilities have appropriate signage and regular safety audits.

Laboratory facilities
  • Ensure that lab facilities are maintained and in good working order. Includes ensuring timely equipment maintenance (and records), ordering and keeping inventory of laboratory supplies.
  • Be accessible to visiting classes and researchers and work to understand their needs and ensure they have access to lab space and UGAMI equipment and supplies, as appropriate.
  • Consult with and advise users concerning plan for safe equipment usage and provide training as needed.

Instructional and research support
  • Work to develop and prepare teaching labs for residential courses. This includes ensuring that necessary laboratory and field equipment is available, assisting with lab set up and take down, and assisting with lab instruction.
  • Provide field support (field logistics, R/V Spartina, M.T. Price) if needed.
  • Provide staff support for experimental facilities. This may include assisting to maintain greenhouse or mesocosm facilities, as appropriate.

  • Maintain property control records.
  • Conduct annual physical inventory.
  • Arrange for property transfers and surplus in conjunction with facilities staff (including vehicles).
