Department of English, GSU, Atlanta Campus


The Department of English of Georgia State University invites applications for the position of Lecturer at its downtown Atlanta campus, which serves a diverse and expanding undergraduate and graduate student body. We seek a versatile candidate to offer coverage in our First Year Writing Program and growth in high-demand areas as we prepare students for emerging careers.

Lecturers at Georgia State University are full-time non-tenure track faculty with both teaching and service requirements who directly contribute to the mission of the university. Lecturers have the opportunity for promotion to Senior Lecturer and Principal Senior Lecturer, based on excellence in teaching and appropriate service. Our lecturers are full members of the department’s intellectual community and leadership team.

Essential Qualifications  
  • MFA or PhD in English at the time of appointment
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching first-year composition or other college-level writing courses
  • Interest in teaching and mentoring students of diverse backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in teaching in hybrid or online modalities
  • Research and/or work experience in multimodal composition, scholarship of teaching and learning, professional writing and editing, and/or writing program administration

The typical teaching load for this position is 4/4. Lecturers will primarily teach writing classes for the First Year Writing Program, which serves all students in the university; additional course assignments will depend on the teaching expertise of the hire and departmental and university needs. Starting salary is expected to be $55,000, depending on experience, with the possibility for additional compensation for summer teaching (10% per course). The start date for this position is August 2023.
