Job Description
Lecturer in US and/or Modern World History – Log #24-066
Georgia State University

The Department of History (downtown Atlanta campus) at Georgia State University invites applications for Lecturers in US and/or Modern World History (1500 CE to present) to begin Fall 2023. GSU history lecturers are full time, non-tenure track instructors who make vital contributions to the Department’s undergraduate teaching and programmatic mission, with opportunities for promotion in rank based on the quality of one’s teaching and service. Georgia State, located in the heart of a vibrant metropolitan area in the Southeastern United States, enrolls and graduates one of the most diverse student bodies in the nation. Georgia State is the largest university in the state of Georgia and a national leader in innovative efforts to promote student success. It ranks among the nation’s top universities as one of the Carnegie Foundation’s elite category of the Highest Research Activity, and it is the 10th most racially and ethnically diverse university in the nation. Demonstrating that students of all backgrounds can achieve academic and career success is central to the University’s mission. The Department of History (https://history.gsu.edu) is committed to enhancing its research and instructional excellence by diversifying its faculty. Accordingly, individuals belonging to underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. The College of Arts & Sciences supports faculty professional success through mentoring programs and representation of faculty from all ranks in college-level program development. GSU is an institutional member of the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity.

The Department of History welcomes applicants who are committed to creative, engaging pedagogies, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and the development of learning opportunities beyond the classroom. Due to the nature of its student body, the Department further welcomes applicants with a passion for, and proven effectiveness in, teaching diverse student populations and mentoring them. Candidates should speak to this in their teaching statement (see below).

Lecturers normally teach four sections of a lower-division survey in their area of expertise per semester. An upper-level course in area of specialization may occasionally replace one section of the survey.

Applicants should submit: 1) a Cover Letter (2 single-spaced pages); 2) a CV (if the doctorate is not already in hand, please indicate the expected date of graduation); 3) a Teaching Statement (1-2 single-spaced pages, that includes a narrative of your teaching goals, approach, and philosophy); and 4) the names, contact information, and affiliations of three potential referees.
