The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team of engineers in the development of critical systems for the DoD, and will play a key role in ensuring the successful integration of those systems into existing and new infrastructures.

Job Purpose

The Cyber Security Software Engineer designs, develops, and tests cybersecurity software in languages such as Java, C, and C++. The Cyber Security Software Engineer requires extensive knowledge of programming languages, software development, and computer operating systems in order to apply engineering principles to software creation. The necessary skill areas for the Cyber Security Software Engineer include programming and coding, fundamentals of computer science, design and architecture, algorithms and data structures, information analysis, debugging software, and testing software. The Cyber Security Software Engineer also creates novel cyber security technology components and software to ensure that critical systems and information are resilient to cyber exploits and attacks. The researcher also performs attendant vulnerability assessments, analysis, and software engineering and design. The Cyber Security Software Engineer also develops hardware and software prototypes and tests those prototypes in realistic environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Guide software development cycle through all phases including requirements gathering, software design, software implementation, and test.
  • Interact with sponsor to determine requirements.
  • Help lead software design effort and implementation.
  • Ensure proper testing process is in place.
  • Primary author of technical reports/presentations for projects of moderate/high complexity.
  • Compile report input from other researchers and prepare final report deliverable.
  • Lead and/or contribute to white papers and proposals.
  • Propose and lead IRAD programs
  • Create and analyze network protocols
  • Perform software development, software reverse engineering, software vulnerability research, and software exploitation
  • Guide and lead reverse engineering efforts through all phases of the project
  • Guide and lead software vulnerability research through all phases of the project

Additional Responsibilities

  • Architect and design frameworks used by applications that are running on Java EE / Jakarta EE platforms
  • Create, refactor, and/or implement Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) and/or Microservice Architectures (MSA)
  • Assist with and understand the building of applications using stored procedures, functions, and triggers on RDBMS such as Oracle and PostgreSQL
  • Own the product throughout the software lifecycle from ideation to deployment
  • Contribute with hands-on development, (not a design-only position)
  • Engage in code reviews to ensure team members are contributing code that meets the short and long-term goals of our applications and architecture
  • Promote innovation within your team's work
  • Articulate context internally for the team and to the larger organization
  • Consult with management, development, infrastructure, test, and operational teams to address issues relating to application architecture, such as performance and availability, and recommend solutions
  • Provide the technical coaching to get your team to experiment and to solve technical problems in unique ways
  • Lead and participate in the conceptual phases of identifying and solving business problems and initiatives
  • Own Architectural design of the major pieces (business capabilities and internal processing)
  • Provide Oversight and governance of current and next-generation software solutions
  • Provide technical expertise in proof-of-concept, archetype evaluations, and implementations

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Willingness to obtain a CISSP certification
  • Willingness to obtain a Master's degree
  • Prior hands-on experience coding in Java
  • Prior hands-on experience with Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) and Microservice Architectures
  • Prior hands-on experience architecting and designing frameworks to be used by applications that are running on a Java EE / Jakarta EE platform
  • Prior hands-on experience with legacy and modern Java technologies, JSON, web services (REST and SOAP), JavaScript, data access components, and XML
  • Prior hands-on experience with containerization and orchestration with technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, or OpenShift
  • Prior hands-on experience with IaaS, PaaS, and Cloud Services such as AWS or Azure

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI Clearance
  • Technical diagnostic expertise including problem investigation, reproduction, and resolution skills
  • Ability to acquire new skills efficiently
  • Thrives in collaborative environment
  • Proficiency in JavaScript, HTML, CSS, SQL and Data Structures with a good knowledge of their ecosystems
  • Understands and can implement CI/CD strategies
  • Strong Agile experience using KANBAN or Scrum
  • Experience designing systems with considerations for scalability, resiliency, and performance
  • Working knowledge of Enterprise Frameworks, Applications, and Integration Patterns
  • Experience successfully working with Developers, Architects, and Product Owners to give options for potential solutions
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented programming
  • Strong communication skills; ability to speak to and influence engineers, product and project managers, corporate leadership, partners, and customers
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to rapidly develop and cultivate relationships with peers, partners, and key influencers

  • 14 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical area.
  • 12 years of related experience with a Masters' degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical area.
  • 9 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical area.

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
