Job Summary

The Georgia Institute of Technology invites applications for an open-rank Academic Professional with the working title of Director of Academic Success in Academic Success and Advising (ASA), a unit within the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE). Reporting to the Executive Director of Academic Success and Advising (ASA) and serving as a member of the ASA and Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE) leadership teams, the director assumes leadership and responsibility for programs and services that provide academic assistance and promote student learning, with an emphasis on peer instruction in introductory STEM and other quantitative courses. This position will partner with faculty and Teaching Assistants (TAs) who teach these courses and will collaborate closely with the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) to initiate and lead initiatives that focus on improving student learning. The director will also provide campus-wide leadership around STEM-focused academic success initiatives, working in partnership with academic advisors and administrators in other academic support-focused units (e.g., OMED, CommLab, Residence Life, Athletics, Disability Services). Finally, the director advocates for student success; stays current with research and trends in academic support; participates actively in relevant professional organizations (e.g., NCLCA, ACTP, CRLA); and seeks opportunities for grant-funded initiatives.

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Design, develop and oversee comprehensive academic success programs that support student success and learning in Georgia Tech's STEM and quantitatively focused curriculum with special attention to High Priority populations in alignment with the Institute's strategic priorities.

  • May lead other academic success programs and initiatives that are not course specific designed to improve academic skills and performance.
  • Partner with the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) to design faculty, TA, and technology-enhanced initiatives to enhance student learning. This might include engaging faculty and TAs in creating conditions for academic well-being in STEM courses, developing custom workshops for courses, and providing resources and support for individualized student learning in STEM courses. This will include meeting regularly with the director of CTL and responding to direction and guidance on these initiatives.

  • Develop and directly implement new academic support programs and initiatives that support learning and success, primarily focused on core STEM courses; this will include initiatives during summer session (or possibly other times of the academic year) that help prepare students for entry into these courses.
  • Support University System of Georgia (USG) initiatives such as Complete College Georgia (CCG) and Momentum Year. This may include attending meetings, developing programs/initiatives, collecting and analyzing data, and preparing reports as requested.
  • Collect, analyze, and report on program data and outcomes; work with IRP, EDM, Registrar's Office, and other relevant departments to connect program data with institutional/academic student data to generate comprehensive analyses on academic support programs, outcomes and effectiveness.
  • Develop and teach a course on STEM learning/student success, or related learning how to learn course, particularly with a disciplinary context (e.g., Succeeding in Calculus). Will teach at least 2 sections of the course each academic year as assigned by the Executive Director.
  • Design and implement student success programs, workshops, and other initiatives focused on student success in STEM disciplines. Participate in ASA-wide student success outreach and intervention initiatives.
  • May teach at least one academic course per year, in an area of disciplinary expertise (with approval from the appropriate college/school).
  • Regularly consult and review literature related to STEM learning and academic support; participate and engage in appropriate scholarly and professional development activities, including organizations such as NCLCA, ATCP, or others focused on student learning and academic support.
