Position Summary
The Weiss Lab at The University of Georgia's Complex Carbohydrate Research Center (www.ccrc.uga.edu) is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Professional to join our laboratory and contribute to drug discovery studies in models of rare disease. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in conducting preclinical research aimed at identifying novel therapeutic targets and evaluating potential treatments for these conditions. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in a collaborative and dynamic environment and will provide multidisciplinary training in mammalian cell culture, preclinical drug discovery, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, and structural analysis of glycans.

Research Professional responsibilities include mouse colony maintenance, mammalian tissue/cell culture, in vivo drug discovery studies, and lab management. The position involves the application of CRISPR/Cas9 technologies, high-throughput drug screening, and mass spectrometry applications. The Research Professional will assist with these tasks after appropriate training. The position also involves preparation of writing reports, mentoring students/trainees, protocol optimization and some method development.

  • Extensive prior experience with human cell culture and basic molecular biology techniques.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills and fluency in written and spoken English

Experimental design and execution
  • Lead the conceptualization and development of experimental plans and protocols, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of the research objectives and methodologies.
  • Exercise autonomy in decision-making regarding experimental design, taking into account scientific rigor, feasibility, and potential impact.
  • Oversee the execution of experiments by junior lab members, providing guidance, training, and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Assume responsibility for the overall quality control of experimental procedures, ensuring adherence to protocols and ethical standards.

Data collection and analysis. Preparing written and oral communication of research output. Lab related activities, including meetings and collaborative projects.
  • Take a leadership role in data collection, employing advanced techniques and instrumentation to generate high-quality data sets for the analysis of glycosaminoglycans.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports, manuscripts, and presentations detailing research findings, demonstrating proficiency in scientific writing and communication.
  • Effectively communicate research progress and outcomes through oral presentations at departmental seminars, scientific conferences, and collaborative meetings.
  • Engage in collaborative projects with external partners, fostering interdisciplinary teamwork and contributing valuable insights from the lab's research endeavors.

Duties/Responsibilities
Mouse colony management
  • Primary responsibility for the management and oversight of the mouse colony, including breeding, genotyping, and maintenance of mouse lines.
  • Lead animal studies in compliance with OLAW regulations, develop AUPs, and pursue approval with the institutional IACUC in collaboration with the PI
  • Develop and implement strategies for optimizing breeding efficiency, minimizing genetic drift, and ensuring the availability of experimental cohorts as needed.
  • Coordinate with veterinary staff and animal care personnel to ensure compliance with animal welfare regulations and ethical standards.
  • Maintain detailed records of mouse husbandry activities, genotyping results, and experimental cohorts, ensuring accuracy and traceability of data.

Lab maintenance and organization
  • Establish and maintain efficient laboratory workflows and systems, including inventory management, equipment maintenance, and safety protocols.
  • Take the lead in organizing lab space, ensuring cleanliness, orderliness, and compliance with UGA laboratory safety guidelines.
  • Act as a resource for junior lab members, providing training, troubleshooting assistance, and guidance on laboratory techniques and procedures.
