The University of Georgia's Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SkIO) is a multidisciplinary research and training institution located on a 700-acre campus on Skidaway Island. This position assists in the operation and maintenance of boats, vessels, and marine equipment. Position reports to the Marine Superintendent, and work is performed under the direct supervision of the Captain of the vessel.

Knowledge of marine maintenance and repair; Ability to work independently; Ability to work in a variety of conditions, climate controlled and outdoor environments; Demonstrated ability to maintain working relationships amongst an environment of individuals with a wide range of professional and academic experiences.

Lift and carry 70 pounds repeatedly throughout the work day; Work at sea for periods of several days to several weeks.

Responsible of the operation and maintenance of deck equipment, including frames, winches, crane and ship's tender.

Loading and Unloading scientific gear, deployment and retrieval of scientific instrumentation and deck operations.

Stand navigational watches as directed by the Captain.

Assist in the maintenance of safety equipment and participation in safety drills.

Perform various housekeeping assignments which on occasion may include cooking.
