Company Overview

Since its establishment in 1970, The Children’s School has maintained a tradition of quality education. An independent, nonprofit elementary school, The Children’s School is a learning environment in which academic development is stressed with social and emotional growth. The atmosphere is a caring, nurturing one that fosters a deep sense of community.

Our History

Lila B. McDill founded The Children’s School in 1970. After working for many years in both public and independent schools, Lila believed there was a more effective way of educating children in the elementary grades. With limited funds and a group of enthusiastic supporters, The Children’s School was able to open with one additional teacher and seventeen children in a building provided by the Druid Hills Presbyterian Church.

In 1973 the school moved to its current location at 345 Tenth Street. By then the student body totaled seventy students.

Throughout the years, The Children’s School has continued to grow and expand. In the early ‘70’s, the Board of Trustees purchased an additional building. Music, media and physical education specialists joined the faculty. The school responded to changing family needs by adding an extended day and a summer camp program.

With the retirement of Lila McDill in 1979, the Board of Trustees elected Eve Corey Poling, a former teacher and administrator in the school, as principal. The number of students increased to 129 in 1983, the year in which the school was granted initial accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Maryann Jernigan and Margaret Wynne served as the school’s administrators from 1987 - 1990. In 1990, Marcia Prewitt Spiller, who had been the Assistant Head of School, was appointed Head of School.

The Children’s School has continued to expand and improve facilities by renovating existing spaces, leasing additional buildings, purchasing adjacent property, and building new classroom, physical education and music spaces.

This year, the students will participate in the 35th year of quality education at The Children’s School. The campus now consists of ten buildings, a physical education/multi-purpose space, a music space, an art center, a media center, and three playing fields. Currently The Children’s School educates 380 children from 3 years old through the sixth grade.
