Position Summary
UGA Field Services provides wellness and emergency care in an ambulatory setting to the surrounding community. The UGA Field Services Section serves a diverse caseload consisting of horses (~75%), cattle (~10-15%), small ruminants (~5-10%), camelids and companion swine (<5%). Field services faculty provide veterinary care for all aspects of large animal medicine and surgery including, but not limited to, preventive medicine, basic and advanced dentistry, internal medicine, advanced lameness and rehabilitation, field surgery, emergency medicine, theriogenology, and herd/flock health. The Field Services section currently consists of faculty clinicians who are boarded diplomates (DACVS-LA, DACVSMR, DACVIM, DACT, DACVDC, Cert. ZWD, DACVPM). Two Field Service clinicians are additionally certified in acupuncture and spinal manipulation, with one clinician also being a certified journeyman farrier.
The Staff Veterinarian would help support a busy daytime caseload approximately 3-4 days per week and would provide daytime and after-hours emergency coverage. The Staff Veterinarian would cover approximately 30% of after-hours emergencies in all large animal species (~60% equine, ~15-20% cattle, ~15-20% small ruminant, and other <5%). Initial faculty phone back-up for after-hours emergencies will be available if the Staff Veterinarian is not comfortable with all large animal species. This position is 100% service and clinical teaching of 4th year veterinary students with no research requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • DVM degree or equivalent
  • Completion of at least one large animal internship or 3 years practice experience
  • Comfort and experience with equine general and emergency practice
  • Preference will be given to applicants who are comfortable working on all large animal species.
